Where does it happen?

goDream is run at Tafaria Castle & Center for the Arts. It is an immersive, educational, and fun program for students.

Can we attend as individuals?

goDream is booked through schools at a date of choice that is convenient for the school.

How long does it take?

goDream is customized for each school group to run between 1 to 3 days, depending on the school’s needs and the scope of coverage across the three modules (Life Skills, Arts and Leadership).

A cost proposal is given depending on the length of stay, number of students, and scope.

Do teachers get involved?

What facilities are available at Tafaria?

Tafaria Center for the Arts has facilities for visual and performing arts. These include studios for fine art, sculpture, fashion design, graphics & print, pottery, software development, beauty, culinary, music recording and a dance studio. This vast center also has an auditorium, training rooms, workshops and galleries and accommodation for artists.

What is the typical length of a Tafaria Art residency?

The typical length of a Tafaria Foundation sponsored residency is one month. Self-Sponsored residencies range from one week onwards depending on ones needs.

What do self-sponsored Tafaria Art residencies cost?

A typical self-sponsored residency costs approximately 500 dollars per week.

Are art collectives eligible for the Tafaria Art residency?

Typically, not but sometimes Tafaria does calls that require collaborations. However, for self-funded residency, yes, collectives are eligible for the residency.

Does Tafaria own my work after the residency?

No, the work produced whilst in residence belongs to the artist. They may credit Tafaria if they so wish but it is not mandatory. Tafaria however encourages arts to leave some work behind to inspire others (Visitors & artists). All works produced in residence is copyrighted to the artist under the KECOBO via the National Rights Registry.

Are Tafaria Art workspaces provided during the residency?

Yes, we have working spaces available. Tafaria is a residency program providing access studios, workshops, exhibition spaces etc during residency. Access to these spaces is managed by the center staff according to the needs of each artist. In case an artist wishes to make an installation at a public space e.g. a school, market, church etc, the same is facilitated by the Center where possible.

Can I use the Center equipment during the residency?

Absolutely, there is always the possibility of borrowing some Center equipment during the residency period depending on the availability.

Are the Tafaria Center for the Arts spaces accessible by people with reduced mobility?

The Center spaces are partially accessible for those with reduced mobility, although if additional assistance is required it can be arranged with artists who require it. This needs prior arrangement.

Is there an application fee for Tafaria Art?

There is no application fee. All applications unless otherwise stated are made and processed for free.

Can I submit an existing idea during my application?

Existing ideas for sponsored residencies are not eligible for this residency. Creatives are encouraged to take the formative days in residence to ideate inspired by their new residency environment or based on pre-determined themes if specified on the call.

Is there any letter or agreement to sign before my Tafaria Art residency commencement?

Yes; all participating artists sign a Letter of Agreement with the residency terms and conditions.

Are spouses and other visitors allowed to visit me during my Art residency at Tafaria

Preamble

Across Kenya’s communities lies a vast body of traditional wisdom expressed through proverbs, stories, cultural practices and everyday reflections about life. Over generations, many of these insights have been carefully preserved and documented through research, literature, and cultural archives.

Yet while much of this wisdom is documented, it is rarely presented in ways that allow it to be fully experienced and internalized.

Most traditional knowledge today exists primarily in written form within books, academic papers, and cultural documentation. While these records are invaluable, they often limit how deeply people engage with the ideas they contain.

Educational research, particularly experiential learning theory, demonstrates that people understand and remember ideas more powerfully when learning engages multiple senses and involves direct experience. Knowledge that can be seen, heard, touched, explored and interacted with becomes far more memorable than knowledge encountered only through reading or listening.

Experiential learning suggests that people retain knowledge more effectively when the know knowledge is accessed through multisensory pathways where we can see, touch, feel, hear and taste and when we

1. encounter ideas in real environments
2. engage physically or emotionally with them
3. reflect on those experiences
4. connect them in context

In such settings, learning becomes immersive rather than abstract, allowing ideas to remain vivid long after the experience itself.

This insight is especially relevant for traditional wisdom and philosophical ideas, which were historically transmitted through oral storytelling, lived experience and communal practice rather than through written texts.

The Tafaria Outdoor Museum of Philosophy seeks to revive this experiential dimension of wisdom by transforming philosophical ideas into multi-sensory outdoor installations.

Instead of presenting philosophy solely through written interpretation, the museum will translate cultural insights into:

The Project

The Museum of Philosophy & Ideas seeks to collect, interpret and translate community wisdom, proverbs, life lessons and philosophical insights from across Kenya into physical outdoor installations.

Each Kenyan community will contribute 2–3 core philosophical ideas, which will be interpreted through:

1. Sculpture
2. Landscape design
3. Sound installations
4. Interactive artworks
5. Storytelling

The result will be a multi-sensory landscape of ideas where visitors walk through the fields and encounter philosophical insights expressed through art, environment and cultural storytelling.

The Residency

Tafaria invites researchers, anthropologists, artists, designers and creative thinkers to participate in a residency focused on developing the conceptual and artistic foundations of this museum.

Residents will work collaboratively to:

• Document and interpret wisdom traditions from Kenyan communities

• Translate philosophical insights into visual and spatial concepts

• Design multi-sensory outdoor installations

• Explore new ways of presenting philosophy through landscape, art and storytelling

The residency is designed as a cross-disciplinary collaboration between cultural research and artistic creation.
