Rather than asking people to leave rural areas in search of opportunity, Tafaria was created around the opposite idea: bring knowledge, creativity, enterprise and meaningful experiences into the countryside.

From a personal dream to a larger purpose

The story began with George Tafaria's childhood desire to help transform the rural area where he grew up. Together with Eunice Tafaria, that idea developed from an open-air community information centre into a castle, country lodge, conference centre and Center for the Arts.

The castle is the most visible symbol, but it is only one part of the idea. Hospitality sits alongside art, education, agriculture, conservation, science and technology so that a guest can come to rest or celebrate and still encounter something that sparks curiosity.

A place designed to demonstrate possibilities

The museum, Nano Herbarium, Nano Farm, arts studios, school programmes and community-facing work all make the founding purpose tangible. They show how learning and creativity can be woven into ordinary rural life rather than treated as activities that only happen in cities or formal institutions.

That is why the language of dreaming runs through Tafaria. The dream is not presented as an escape from reality, but as a starting point for building something useful, beautiful and capable of opening possibilities for others.
